Our Mission
The Incomati River, originating in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, weaves through Eswatini and Mozambique, extending approximately 480 kilometers before reaching its mouth at Maputo Bay. Covering a drainage area of 47,000 square kilometers, the river supports essential agricultural, industrial, and environmental functions across the region. The Incomati River sustains a vibrant range of ecosystems, from its headwaters to the estuarine zones in Mozambique, which are vital for fish species, migratory birds, and other wildlife dependent on its waters. These unique habitats, particularly the lagoons and biodiversity-rich areas at the river’s mouth, are central to the livelihoods of local communities, which rely on fishing, agriculture, and access to clean water for their well-being
For the communities along the Incomati, especially in Mozambique’s drier regions where rainfall averages around 740 mm annually, the river is a primary water source, supporting agriculture and providing essential daily water needs. However, climate variability and an increasing demand for water have made resource management more challenging. While cross-border agreements exist to promote sustainable usage, such as those overseen by the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM), government funding alone has proven insufficient to address the range of conservation and education needs.
Our NGO, Incomati Non-Profit, works to fill this gap, directly supporting the communities dependent on the river by providing clean water access, environmental education, and conservation initiatives. Government support is limited in both reach and resources, so we rely on donor funding to protect the Incomati’s ecosystems, improve water accessibility, and support sustainable development for the people who rely on this precious resource. Your support helps us ensure the river’s health and the survival of the rich biodiversity that defines the region, from its origins in the South African highlands to the flourishing estuaries where it meets the Indian Ocean.

Incomati Basin Conservation
Conserving the Incomati basin’s biodiversity, water, farming, health, and education.
The Foundation actively conserves the Incomati River basin by protecting biodiversity, providing clean water through boreholes, and implementing sustainable farming practices.
We establish health clinics, schools, and environmental education programs, support local farmers, manage conservation areas, and fund biodiversity research, fostering resilience and sustainable development for the communities and ecosystems we serve.
Our Goal
Preserving the Incomati River basin’s biodiversity, water, and sustainable livelihoods.
Our Foundation aims to preserve the Incomati River basin by conserving natural resources and biodiversity, supporting sustainable subsistence activities, managing Conservation Areas, fostering ecological research, and promoting eco-friendly tourism.
These initiatives also focus on educating communities, enhancing local participation, and strengthening sustainable livelihoods to protect water resources and the environment.
